ABBEVILLE, La. (
KLFY) — The family of 38-year-old Megan Plowden is remembering her legacy over a year after she passed. Plowden was killed in single-vehicle car crash in Scarborough, Maine in November of 2023, while working as a traveling nurse.
Megan’s sister, Brittany Plowden, said Megan did a lot of advocacy work for the Abbeville community before her death and she wants to keep her sister’s name alive.
“Megan’s vision was brilliant, and I think she touched a lot of people, and that’s why we feel like she’s black history,” said Brittany.
Brittany said when Megan was alive, she advocated for her son, Dylan Plowden, who lost his life to gun violence back in December of 2017.
Jalen Juwan Levine was arrested back in December of 2017 for the murder of 14-year-old Dylan Plowden. A Vermilion Parish jury returned a unanimous guilty verdict for Levine, and he faces mandatory life without parole on the first-degree murder charge.
“Through her grieving for Dylan, she would still do it, and I always admire that because I’m a mother myself and recognizing how she moved even through the grieving process, that was admirable, and I couldn’t do it,” said Brittany.
In the wake of Dylan’s death, Megan founded the non-profit organization, “Dylan Saves the Youth”. An organization aimed at supporting mothers who have experienced similar losses due to gun violence. It was also designed to get the youth more involved in community service.
“She didn’t want other mothers to go through what she went through, so she went as far as meeting with mothers such as Trayvon Martin’s mother, doing different things like peaceful marches for the youth,” said Brittany.
Brittany said she hopes to continue her sister’s organization and give back in the community, just as Megan would want.
“I want to keep her vision alive because how she felt, she genuinely cared about those kids, even though she fought for Dylan, she cared about the kids, that’s why she started what she started,” she said.
Brittany has set up a GoFundMe to help restart Megan’s non-profit organization.
