Driver dead, deputy injured in two-vehicle Red River Parish crash

COUSHATTA, La. (KLFY) — A two-vehicle accident has claimed the life of a Coushatta woman and left a Red River Parish deputy severely injured officials said.

Louisiana State Police said, troopers were notified of a two-vehicle accident around 10 a.m. Saturday, on U.S. Highway 84 near Cut-Off Road. The crash claimed the life of 70-year-old Ella Winn of Coushatta and left 23-year-old Deputy Asia Pikes with severe injuries.

Officials said an initial investigation revealed the crash occurred as Pikes was driving a 2019 Chevrolet Tahoe, visibly marked as a Red River Parish Sheriff’s Office unit with emergency lights and sirens activated, west on U.S. Highway 84 as Winn traveled east in a 2022 Nissan Rogue. For reasons still under investigation, the Nissan made a left turn and collided with the Tahoe.

Officials said Winn, who was unrestrained at the time of the crash, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Pikes, who was properly restrained, sustained severe injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Impairment is not suspected, however, standard toxicology samples were collected from both drivers and submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.
