New Orleans krewes optimistic about parade reschedules due to severe weather

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Mardi Gras parades across the Greater New Orleans area were canceled on Sunday due to severe weather.

In New Orleans, the Mystic Krewe of Femme Fatale, Krewe of Carrollton and Krewe of King Arthur, will now parade on Tuesday night.

Officer of the Krewe of King Arthur Kevin O’Shaughnessy says a lot of their riders are from out of town, however, he understands the circumstances.

“While you don’t want to cancel, right, you don’t want to necessarily move, but you got to do something. So, in order for us to have the biggest crowds, the most fun, we just make do and, you know, try to make the best of it,” said O’Shaughnessy.

President of the Mystic Krewe of Femme Fatale Kimberly Early agrees, saying changes to the schedule excites them even more.

“It kind of caught us by surprise, but we are excited about the change. We’ve always had an idea of riding at night, and this gives us that opportunity to do it, but the femmes are always ready to roll,” said Early.

For both krewes, this will be a new experience being able to showcase their amazing krewes at night. As they say, they have a lot in store for paradegoers.

O’Shaughnessy highlights one unique aspect is that the majority of their floats are equipped with lights designed specifically for nighttime parades.

“They’ll see a totally different side of King Arthur. You know, our floats will all look different. Some of the things that we’ve put on the floats are lighting, and it will be a lot more dramatic. People should be really excited to come out and see what we have,” said O’Shaughnessy.

The dynamic ladies in the Krewe of Femme Fatale plan to look fabulous coming down the street in candy apple red and white. Early says they have new throws for everyone.

“We have a lot of throws for our men that come out and see us. We have partnered up with the United Way of Southeast Louisiana, and we are actually passing out little children’s books. So, we want to promote literacy in our young adults. We have lighted beads that we always have and now will definitely come in handy on Tuesday night,” said Early.
