Merced Police say no additional victims after high school sexual assault allegations

MERCED, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – Police have confirmed that there are currently no additional victims identified in an ongoing sexual assault investigation involving a staff member at El Capitan High School, according to the Merced Police Department.

The suspect, identified as 34-year-old John Mobley III, was arrested on Thursday. Flachman says the arrest directly followed a report from the Merced Union High School District that led to an investigation by law enforcement.

Officials say the investigation remains active, with detectives continuing to collect evidence. However, officials confirmed that no additional victims have been identified.

Mobley, who served as a guidance counselor at El Capitan High School, was placed on administrative leave by the school district.

The Merced Union High School District provided a statement following Mobley’s arrest that read in part:

Administration has and will continue to fully cooperate with the MPD in regard to its ongoing investigation.

As soon as Administration became aware of reports that John Mobley III had engaged in inappropriate conduct with a student, he was immediately placed on administrative leave and the District has commenced its own investigation into the allegations.

The District is limited in what details it can disclose due to student and employee privacy. We understand the impact this incident may have on our school community and we are committed to providing support to students, parents, and staff.

Merced Union High School District has also stated that support services are available for the victim and other students. The district encourages any students with information or concerns to contact their School Resource Officer (SRO) or school administration.
