CHICAGO — While winter weather can mean traffic jams and slippery sidewalks, some residents have no trouble adapting when snow blankets the city.

Just like the humans who brave the cold to experience what Chicago has to offer in the winter, several species at Lincoln Park Zoo have adapted to blustery weather and zookeepers said many of them even choose to spend time out in the snow to get a bit of fresh air or spend some time on their heated rocks.

The animals who do brave the cold leave behind foot, talon and paw prints in the fresh snow and Zookeepers have been documenting the unique patterns left behind by some of them.

Zoo officials said welfare is one of their top priorities and that includes making sure their animals are comfortable and able to enjoy time indoors and outdoors during all four seasons.

“Making sure the animals at Lincoln Park Zoo are safe and comfortable is our number one goal all year long. We adjust our care plans with the changing of Chicago’s seasons, and we love to see certain species thriving in the snowier months,” General Curator Dave Bernier said. “Plus, we’ve made a fun game out of matching the footprints to the species or individual every winter!”

According to officials, when visitors see animals spending time outside in the snow or cold temperatures, it is because the animal chose to be there and always has the option to go back inside if they choose.,

Many of the outdoor habitats at the zoo also have warming and protective elements like climate-controlled spaces, pools and heated rocks.
