LOUISVILLE, Ky. (FOX 56) — Louisville metro police report that officers are investigating an afternoon shooting at a Kentucky driver licensing office.

It happened around noon on Friday in the 6200 block of Willismore Drive. According to the Louisville Metro Police Department, the shooting occurred at the Dixie Highway regional driver licensing office.

When officers arrived, they found three victims outside the office. Two women were taken to the University of Louisville Hospital, where they later died, per LMPD.

Police said that a man was pronounced deceased on the scene.

Maj. Donald Boeckman said in a news conference that the shooter fled the scene in a vehicle before officers arrived but officials don’t believe there is a threat to the public at this time.

“It’s absolutely a tragedy and I’m surprised that there weren’t more people injured with as many people who were standing outside,” Boeckman said.

LMPD said that Kentucky State Police responded due to the shooting occurring at a public office but are not assisting in the investigation.

On Friday afternoon, Gov. Andy Beshear called the shooting a “senseless act of violence.”

“A senseless act of violence outside of a regional driver licensing office on Dixie Highway in Louisville has taken the lives of three people. This is an ongoing situation, and we will share more information as available,” Beshear said. “I want to thank the brave law enforcement officers who responded quickly to the scene and to our Kentucky Transportation Cabinet team members who worked quickly to protect their fellow Kentuckians. Let’s pray for the family members of those lost during this difficult time.”

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet said in a news release that security at the office locked down the building quickly following shots being fired.

“We are thankful that all our employees are safe and our hearts go out to the victims of the incident,” the release said. Employees were sent home, and the office was closed for the day.
