According to Barkus’ website, this year’s theme is “Vanity Fur: Barkus Rules the Runway.” A pre-parade “Pawty” will begin in Armstrong Park at 10:30 a.m., with the parade starting at 2 p.m.
It will follow a 15-block route in the French Quarter, starting at Armstrong Park and heading through the Vieux Carré. The parade will make a stop at the corner of Dauphine and St. Ann streets, at the Good Friends Bar, to toast the royal court. The parade will pass by Jackson Square and end by looping right back to Armstrong Park.
The king of Barkus is Petey Benson, Gayle and Tom Benson’s Yorkshire Terrier, and the queen is Ruthie Sable, a foxhound-dalmatian mix adopted out of Washington D.C. by Craig and Barb Sable, of New Orleans.
Additionally, after he was recently captured again on Feb. 11, Scrim the dog will serve as Barkus’ grand marshal. Due to his fear of crowds, a statue of him will be pushed through the French Quarter as Scrim-themed throws are tossed.
