Southeast patrol officers responded to a domestic violence call where they say crying was heard from behind the closed apartment door.
Police say an officer witnessed through the window a man holding a large knife near a female victim. Officers quickly forced entry to protect the lives inside.
Officers reported once inside they took the suspect into custody and provided medical aid to the victim. The man was eventually arrested and booked into the Fresno County jail.
Throughout the incident, investigators say three young children were very upset and crying. To help bring them comfort, officers gave them Trauma Bears thanks to a donation from the Assistance League.
According to the Assistance League of Fresno, Operation Bear Hug was their first philanthropic effort in 1988 designated to providing certified emergency agencies with teddy bears to offer victims who have experienced trauma.
If you or anyone you know is a victim of domestic violence, you are urged to call 9-1-1 in an emergency or the police department if you are actively safe at 559-621-7000. Assistance with resources including legal advocacy, counseling or education can be found at the Marjaree Mason Center.
