Late second half goal sends Loyola girls’ soccer to state championship

SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) — A late goal in the second half sent the Loyola girls’ soccer team to the state championship after a 1-0 semifinal win over Calvary Friday night in Messmer Stadium.

The Lady Flyers maintained possession of the ball most of the night. Loyola had several offensive opportunities throughout the game, but none resulted in a goal until late in the second half.

With less than 10 minutes left in regulation, an Ainsley Matlock corner kick led to the only goal of the night.

The corner kick was placed in just the right spot where the ball bounced off of a Calvary defender finding the back of the net and then giving the Lady Flyers the 1-0 victory.

Now No. 1 Loyola will take on No. 2 Isidore Newman at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 18th at Strawberry Stadium on Southeastern Louisiana University’s campus in Hammond, Louisiana.
