The incident, which occurred on Saturday, Feb. 1 on Brightside Drive, left Conr Dean shaken but lucky to be alive.
Dean, who works full-time at a local church, was asleep in her bedroom when the shooting happened outside her home.
“You can see the blinds were broken and that was the first thing I noticed. Then when I opened it, I saw the bullet hole on this side as well,” Dean said, giving Louisiana First News an exclusive look at the damage.
The bullet traveled across her room, narrowly missing her as she slept.
“I’m assuming by looking at the path, it crossed over my bed while I was sleeping,” she said.
Dean woke up to the sound of rapid gunfire coming from a party near her backyard fence.
“The subsequent rounds woke me up and I kind of rolled out of bed and got on the ground,” she said.
The bullet struck her window. It then flew across the room and got stuck in the bathroom doorframe. Dean realized the full extent of the danger the next morning.
“It didn’t really sink in until the next morning because that’s when I realized there was a bullet hole in the window and also a bullet lodged in the doorframe. I realized it crossed over me while I was sleeping. I was definitely shaken up,” said Dean.
Neighbors also heard the gunfire and ducked for cover. One neighbor’s Ring footage captured the chaos of the moment.
Cpl. Saundra Watts, a spokesperson for the Baton Rouge Police Department, said the investigation is ongoing. She assured the public that no one in Tigerland or LSU areas is at risk right now.
Watts also said that during the shooting, someone shot a man and gunfire struck several vehicles in the area.
“They walked outside of the apartment, and someone opened fire from a vehicle striking one of the victims. He was transported to the hospital by personal vehicle and rushed into surgery,” Watts said.
Dean filed a police report, and the bullet was taken into evidence.
“I think this was just the realization that my backyard faces some activity that would compromise my safety. Seeing the damage to the doorframe is startling because it could have done that damage to a human body,” said Dean.
The Baton Rouge Police Department is still investigating. They urge anyone with information to speak up. If you know something, you can call Crime Stoppers at 225-344-STOP and remain anonymous.
