Two Colorado men arrested for attempted contraband smuggling using air cannon

COLFAX, La. (WNTZ) — An investigation by the Grant Parish Sheriff’s Office led to the arrest of two Colorado men accused of attempting to smuggle more than $200,000 worth of contraband into a federal prison using an air-powered cannon.

Authorities said Jose Francisco Herrera Munoz, 18, and Angel Gonzales Gutierrez, 19, both of Greeley, Colorado, planned to launch packages containing $112,000 worth of tobacco and $89,500 worth of methamphetamine over the prison’s security fence. The cannon, powered by compressed air, is capable of firing objects more than 350 feet.

The two men were arrested and charged with attempting to introduce contraband into a penal institution and attempting to distribute methamphetamine.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has placed a detainer on Munoz, as officials confirmed he is in the country illegally.

The investigation remains ongoing.

NOTE: All suspects named are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
