JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – A man has filed an appeal after he was left off of the ballot in the Jackson mayoral race.

Ali M. ShamsidDeen filed the appeal in the Circuit Court of the First Judicial District of Hinds County. He asked the court to reverse the decision of the City of Jackson Municipal Democratic Executive Committee that left him off of the ballot.

The committee said he did not meet the residential qualifications.

“When I moved to Byram, it was Jackson. I didn’t move away from Jackson. Jackson moved away from me when Byram incorporated. The last time I voted in a municipal election in Byram was in 2017, almost eight years ago. Now, as I say, I moved three years ago. So now, I have a residence in Jackson. They refuse to accept that,” ShamsidDeen told WJTV 12 News.

Keyshia Sanders was also left off of the ballot after she pled guilty to wire fraud in January 2023. She was the former Constituent Service Manager for the City of Jackson.

The Mississippi Supreme Court appointed retired Circuit Judge Forrest A. Johnson, of Natchez, as a special judge to hear the candidate qualification case of ShamsidDeen.
