Bossier City doctor offers affordable alternative to health insurance

BOSSIER CITY, La. (KTAL/KMSS) – The methods and morality of insurance companies in America are under public scrutiny. But at Mira Direct Primary Care in Bossier City, there is a different way to approach care.

Shreveport small business owner Megan Chavez shopped around for health insurance options but kept encountering outrageous prices. She was in a financial situation that many business owners face.

She found an alternative in Bossier City.

“It was completely different than how traditional medicine is. You go into this office and you sit and you’re the only one. Your not in a waiting room for hours. He genuinely cared,” said Chavez.

Dr. Todd Flowers, with Mira Direct Primary Care, said he was in traditional practice and seeing 30 patients a day.

“We were just shuffling patients in and out,” said Flowers. “This gives me an opportunity to really get to know the patient.”

Chavez said comparable prices were $1,500 a month with some crazy $20,000 deductible.

“It’s paid its money back in its weight in gold,” said Billy Weatherall, a Mira patient.

Mira is owned and operated by Dr. Flowers, who gives his patients his cell number so he is available 24 hours a day for anything they need.

“He has a wonderful team of nurses. Very friendly. The response time is great. Anytime I need something I just text him and get a response back. He has his phone on him 24/7,” said Weatherall.

Dr. Flowers offers all the services of a regular clinic, but instead of taking insurance, he offers a monthly subscription of $130 that includes unlimited free visits, no co-pays, and no hidden fees that sometimes appear with insurance billing.

Chavez appreciates the clarity and transparency of knowing exactly how much care is going to cost.

“I’m not going to have to pay a co-pay,” Chavez said.

Dr. Flowers also has an in-house pharmacy.

“I’m able to purchase medication at whole sale prices and then I pass that savings onto the patient. It’s not a profit center for me. I’m really just doing it for the patient,” Dr. Flowers said.

Dr. Flowers opened his practice in 2018. He was one of only two direct primary care doctors in the area. Since then, more practices have opened for people who cannot afford traditional insurance or are just tired of the system.

“People always ask me if I think it’s competition. No it’s not competition. If they fill their practice tomorrow that’s good for me because the biggest barrier to entry is just patient education. Patients don’t know what we do and how we do it,” Dr. Flowers said.

Dr. Flowers also makes house calls. As a family medical doctor, he treats patients from birth to death. He has even been at the bedside of patients when they take their last breaths.

Flowers said that if he was not able to do this type of medicine he would find something else to do. He believes in putting faith before profit.

“Todd is a very good Christian businessman,” Weatherall said.

“I get so much job satisfaction to really take care of the patient and meet them where they are and where the need is,” said Dr. Flowers.
