Baton Rouge leaders launch initiatives to tackle crime, boost homicide rewards

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Baton Rouge officials unveiled new crime-fighting initiatives aimed at addressing rising violence in the city during a news conference led by East Baton Rouge Parish Mayor-President Sid Edwards.

“It’s obvious to everyone we have a problem, we have an issue here in our great parish,” Edwards said. “There are many different tentacles to this problem, and we’re working every one of them as hard as we can.”

Rehiring retired officers

Assistant Chief Administrative Officer Jeff LeDuff highlighted House Bill 15, a law passed last year by the Louisiana Legislature, allowing the city to rehire retired Baton Rouge police officers without impacting their pensions.

“Our police force is in need of seasoned officers who can provide mentorship, leadership, and immediate support to our community,” Edwards said. “By bringing back our retired officers, we are reinforcing our commitment to public safety and ensuring that we have the experienced personnel necessary to combat crime effectively.”

Baton Rouge Police Chief Thomas Morse Jr. echoed the sentiment, expressing excitement about the initiative and emphasizing the need for experienced officers to guide younger recruits.

New Crime Stoppers initiative

Officials also announced a new incentive program to encourage tips in homicide cases, in partnership with Capital Region Crime Stoppers.

Crime Stoppers Executive Director Johnny Dunham said that currently, the organization offers up to $2,500 for information leading to an arrest in a homicide case, and up to $5,000 for multiple homicides. However, under a new initiative called “First 48 Rewards Boost,” those rewards will double if information is submitted within 48 hours of the crime occurring.

“We’re going to increase the reward for a single homicide case to up to $5,000, and for multiple homicides to up to $10,000 if the tip is received within the first 48 hours,” Dunham said.

“We know that the community plays a crucial role in solving crimes,” Edwards added. “By doubling the reward for fast and accurate tips, we hope to motivate more people to come forward with information that can help us bring criminals to justice.”

Baton Rouge homicide count

As of Feb. 10, 2025, the East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner’s Office has reported 12 homicides this year.
