James Bowman, 30, of Appleton, Wisconsin, was convicted of charges of attempted coercion and enticement of a minor and attempted transfer of obscene material to a minor. He pleaded guilty to the charges in October 2024.
According to the Department of Justice, he must serve five years of supervised release, complete sex offender treatment and register as a sex offender after his release from prison.
Officials said Bowman reportedly used social media to try to convince who he thought was an 11-year-old girl in Baton Rouge to have an illegal sexual relationship with him and offered gifts to entice her to engage in sexual acts. The DOJ said the girl was really an undercover law enforcement officer. He allegedly planned an arrangement to train the girl in illegal sex acts in Wisconsin.
He was arrested in January 2024. The DOJ noted that Bowman was previously convicted and sentenced for child sexual exploitation crimes in Wisconsin.
