Attorney General files lawsuit on immigration policies

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Attorney General Liz Murrill is going to court to end what she calls sanctuary city policies that protect illegal immigrants in New Orleans.

Murrill says the legislature passed a law last year requiring local law enforcement to cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. She claims that the current sanctuary city policies prevent the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office from coming into compliance with state law.

Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson, however, released a statement saying that her office will abide by the federal consent decree, which requires the sheriff to work with ICE only in cases involving murder, rape, kidnapping, treason or armed robbery.
