The alleged DUI driver also hit an 82-year-old man, leaving him in critical condition, according to police.
The coroner’s office identified the woman as Micaela Segura Morales, 98, of Fresno.
Officers with the Fresno Police Department responded to the area of Hamilton and Chestnut avenues in Fresno around 5:50 p.m. on Jan. 22 regarding a traffic collision.
Detectives say the driver of a vehicle, identified as Marcelo Gaytan, 56, was traveling northbound on Chestnut. Morales and an 82-year-old man were crossing the intersection when Gaytan collided with them.
Both victims were taken to a local hospital in critical condition, but police say Morales ended up succumbing to her injuries while at the hospital. The man was left in critical condition, suffering from injuries to his head, ribs and lungs. His current status is unknown at this time.
Responding officers say Gaytan remained at the scene. It was determined he was under the influence of alcohol and he was arrested and booked into the Fresno County Jail under suspicion of DUI causing injury/death, DUI over .08% causing injury/death, great bodily injury in the commission of a felony and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.
