Officers say they initiated the traffic stop because the driver was not wearing a seatbelt. The driver fled, which led officers on a pursuit through Atwater and Merced before eventually abandoning the pick-up and fleeing on foot.
CHP says further investigation revealed the vehicle had been stolen just minutes earlier.
The driver was arrested and the stolen pick-up was returned to its owner.
The arrest was made on day four of the 2025 Seat Belts Save Lives campaign, which focuses on increasing seat belt use to save lives in Merced County.
