Man pulled over minutes after stealing truck in Merced County

MERCED COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – A man was pulled over for a seatbelt violation minutes after stealing a pick-up truck in Merced County Wednesday, the California Highway Patrol said.

Officers say they initiated the traffic stop because the driver was not wearing a seatbelt. The driver fled, which led officers on a pursuit through Atwater and Merced before eventually abandoning the pick-up and fleeing on foot.

CHP says further investigation revealed the vehicle had been stolen just minutes earlier.

The driver was arrested and the stolen pick-up was returned to its owner.
