Kings SPCA Hanford animal shelter remains hopeful after announcing closure

HANFORD, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) — The Kings SPCA is being forced to close its Hanford Animal Shelter due to the lack of funding.

The Kings SPCA Animal Shelter in the Hanford Mall will be closing its doors on Feb. 28.

“It really is sad that we have to close the shelter in order for it to continue,” Kings SPCA Board Treasurer Tiffany Hubbard said.

Hubbard said the rescue suffered financial hardships.

“We’re paying the internet in the building. We’re sharing utilities with the rest of the mall,” Hubbard said.

She said another issue was having a large influx of dogs and cats.

“The amount of surrenders or abandonments definitely skyrocketed within a couple of years. And I think every rescue is definitely facing that challenge right now,” Hubbard said.

But Hubbard said they aren’t giving up on the future of finding loving homes for these adorable animals.

“We’re going to restructure. We’re going to look for those grants. We’re going to fundraise. We are going to still get out there, help the community as much as we can,” Hubbard said.

Before closing– the shelter has lowered its adoption fees to $175 for dogs and $100 for cats.

“I know animals are expensive and you want to shower them with love and spoil them all you want. So, we’re hoping those lower adoption fees will get these little guys out,” Hubbard said.

She said the rescue has received an outpouring of support from the community, encouraging anyone willing to offer a forever home to these furry friends or volunteer during this transition.

“I might have to keep some at my house and foster In the meantime if no one else does. But I think the way the community is coming forward and helping us, I don’t think that’s going to be an issue at all,” Hubbard said.

Kings SPCA will host a series of online auctions on its Facebook page and all proceeds will go towards the continued care and placement of the animals.
