The owner, Lance Sanchez, says cookies may not be an essential food item, but it is what he has to give.
Sanchez has always loved baking, and he says the best part is sharing his creations with others. When he saw the sorrow and devastation from the L.A. fires, he wanted to help.
His daughter lives in Southern California, and he is friends with one of the firefighters on the front lines.
“Those guys that are down there, even though it’s only three and a half, four hours away, you know, they’re going through a tragedy. They’re dealing with some stuff that I personally can’t even imagine,” Sanchez said.
He may not be equipped to stop the flames, but he can feed those who are. He plans to pull his blue food trailer to L.A. on Monday to deliver chocolate chip cookies to firefighters and dog treats to animal shelters.
“We’re hoping that, between the dog treats and the actual cookies, we’re hoping to have about a thousand cookies total – 800 to 1000 cookies – to take down there to Los Angeles,” Sanchez said.
He says it has been a community effort, with some of his suppliers donating ingredients.
To some, it may seem like just a cookie. But he says when you are away from family, surrounded by ash, a warm cookie can take you home – even if just for a minute.
“When something like this happens so close – this is one of the biggest tragedies in the history of California – and I really feel like it’s like a brotherhood – or like they’re like a family to us,” Sanchez said.
He hopes that as the firefighters enjoy his cookies, they are reminded that the Central Valley community stands behind them.
He also encourages others to consider creative ways they can help as well. Those interested can view this list of credible organizations to donate to.
