IDENTIFIED: 2 killed after head-on crash in Fresno County
FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – The two people who were killed in a head-on crash Sunday night in Fresno County were identified by the Fresno County Coroner’s Office Friday.

The coroner’s office identified the two as Mark Villalvazo, 32, and Julio Mendez, 24, both of Coalinga.

CHP reported responding to a crash involving two vehicles, a Lexus and a Honda, on Highway 33 just south of Highway 198 on Sunday at around 8:40 p.m.

According to officers, Villalvazo was driving a Lexus on Highway 33, northbound in the southbound lane at a high rate of speed (the wrong direction). At the same time, a Mendez was driving a Honda sedan southbound on the southbound Highway 33.

The California Highway Patrol says Mendez was unable to avoid a collision with Villalvazo, resulting in a head-on crash between the two vehicles. The force of the impact caused Mendez to be ejected from his vehicle and was later pronounced dead on the scene.

Additionally, officers report Villalvazo’s vehicle got completely engulfed in flames, trapping him inside. Villalvazo was also pronounced dead at the scene.
