Big Country Wrap 2024: A year of sports triumphs, milestones & unforgettable moments

BIG COUNTRY, Texas (BCH Sports)We’ve reached that point in the calendar… the finish line of an incredible year of sports in the Big Country. This year was truly historic, filled with memorable moments and countless reasons for West Central Texas to hold its head high.

Programs reached remarkable milestones, achieving historic heights that inspired communities. At the college level, a historic trifecta unfolded as Abilene Christian University, Hardin-Simmons, and McMurry each claimed at least a share of their respective conference titles.

The Wildcats achieved a major milestone by making their first-ever appearance in the FCS playoffs—and they didn’t stop there, securing an impressive victory!

A star was born in the world of disc golf, and she hails from right here in Abilene, Texas.

Emily Weatherman was the talk of the Disc Golf Pro Tour, winning her first pro tournament at just 18 years old. In her debut year, Emily Weatherman secured three podium finishes and earned the title of Female Rookie of the Year.

The Flying Bison were the talk of the town, finishing their inaugural season as the Mid-America League regular-season champions.

In high school, the Goldthwaite girls made the Windmill City proud with a trip to the state championship.

It wasn’t the finish they wanted, but an accomplishment that they will remember forever.

Abilene High ran their way to state, as did the girls and boys of Wylie Tennis.

Two Anson fisherman made their mark by becoming the first team to reach nationals.

Twenty-five Big Country football teams punched their ticket to the playoffs this year, with some breaking free from their history of coming up short.

It was a standout season for 2A teams in the Big Country, as both Cisco and Stamford fought their way to the third round of the playoffs.

In a clash where only one could advance, the Stamford Bulldogs emerged victorious.

They continued their path of dominance as they walloped back-to-back undefeated teams, setting them up with a date in Arlington for the state championship.

Though the final outcome didn’t fall in their favor, their effort and determination mirrored the spirit of West Texas athletes, making their community incredibly proud.

It was truly a year to remember. As we look ahead to 2025, we hope it brings even more unforgettable moments to the Big Country, but the highlights of 2024 will remain etched in our memories forever.
