Big Country Wrap 2024: The year’s most inspiring positive news

BIG COUNTRY, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – Welcome to our Big Country 2024 Wrap of the most uplifting and heartwarming stories of the year! In a time when challenges often surround us, it’s important to pause and celebrate the moments that bring us hope, joy, and inspiration. From the strong spirit of the community to individual stories of kindness and perseverance, 2024 has been a year full of positive change. Let’s take a look back at some of the stories that truly made a difference this year.

5. Community comes together to host mock interviews for Winters ISD students

For years, students in the junior and senior classes at Winters ISD have eagerly anticipated the mock interviews at the World of Work (W.O.W) conference in Abilene. However, when they learned that mock interviews would not be held at the 2024 conference, the community united to organize mock interviews for the students that evening after returning from the event.

“Within an hour, they lined up 12 community members, businessmen and women from Winters, who were willing to help and give our students the opportunity to experience the interview process,” Teacher Deb Pritchard shared.

4. New businesses come to Abilene

Who doesn’t enjoy discovering new places in town? The Key City has undergone many changes, with new businesses opening, existing ones relocating, and even some expanding to second locations. Many of you have taken notice of these developments. In this article, we discuss the new openings of Braum’s on Judge Ely Blvd and Capriotti’s on Catclaw Road.

3. ‘People just want to be noticed’: Abilene crossing guard making each day a blessing

When you’re a child, the whole world can be intimidating and sometimes dangerous. But when Abilene Crossing Guard Brenda Stremmel is on the job, Dyess Elementary parents know they can rest easy. As a retired Kindergarten teacher of 25 years, Stremmel said there’s nothing she loves more than making the school day fun.

2. Aspiring Abilene nature photographer snaps incredible eagle picture

For Abilene resident Elizabeth Brooks, nature photography is just a hobby for now, but one she takes quite seriously. Her Instagram page is full of breathtaking animal and landscape photos she’s taken over the years. One particular photo garnered quite a reaction when she captured a bald eagle perched at Lake Fort Phantom Hill.

1. SAFE, SOUND & HOMEBOUND: Colorado dog lost in Abilene goes home to family after month of community searches

Agro, the dog, quickly became a social media sensation after getting lost while her owners were visiting Abilene in December 2023. When they couldn’t find her, they returned home to Colorado and reached out for help on social media. It didn’t take long for the community to step up. After more than a month of searching with spotters, drones, and traps, Agro was finally reunited with her owners.

Her story inspired A.G.R.O., Abilene’s Gentle Rescuers Organization, a community-based group determined to reunite lost pets with their owners.

And with that, we conclude this year’s roundup of the most positive and inspiring stories. From community support to individual acts of kindness, it’s clear that Abilene and the surrounding areas are filled with people who care and are committed to making a difference. Thank you for being a part of these uplifting stories, and here’s to another year of growth, compassion, and connection.
