BROWNWOOD, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – A member of the Texas National Guard was awarded a challenge coin for stopping an altercation between a police officer and a man on the side of the road in Brownwood.

According to the Brownwood Police Department, on December 6, Officer Austin Carlisle responded to a call about a man walking back and forth on the 3000 Block of Highway 277. As Officer Carlisle arrived at the scene, the man physically resisted and fought the officer’s help.

Brownwood PD stated that Texas National Guard Sergeant Cardiel was driving back to Camp Bowie and saw what was happening between the man and the officer. Sergeant Cardiel ran to assist Officer Carlisle as they helped the man calm down and stay off the highway.

On December 11, the Chief of Brownwood PD, Ed Kading, presented the police department challenge coin to Sergeant Cardiel, his father, and the Command Sergeant Major. According to Strike Your Coin, police challenge coins are a national tradition for police officers to show support for each other and a united goal of a peaceful and nonviolent society.
