JUST IN: Fatal, fiery crash in Merkel

A collision between a minivan and a truck occurred in Merkel on Thursday evening. At approximately 6:00 p.m., emergency crews responded to the access road of I-20 on the east side of town.

According to police, the truck was driven by a subcontractor for TxDOT. When they arrived on the scene, the truck overturned on its side, and they found the minivan fully engulfed in flames.

Police also reported that one person in the minivan had died. Their identity has not been released, as authorities are still notifying the next of kin.

The fire is out and first responders, including the Texas Department of Public Safety, are on the scene. Interstate 20 westbound at mile marker 271 (Iron Horse) is shut down due to the accident. Please avoid the area at this time.
