What’s up with WhatsUp Gold!

What’s Up with WhatsUp Gold!

Recently I’ve run into a lot of customers using WhatsUp Gold to monitor their network. I’ve heard of it throughout the years of working in IT, but it’s the one Infrastructure and Monitoring Tool that I hadn’t used, or even tried.

What can it monitor?

What can’t it monitor is probably the easier question to answer! WhatsUp Gold can monitor application performance, Hyper-V and VMware VMs and infrastructure, bandwidth consumption, network performance, wireless networks, and even your Cloud-based infrastructure!

But does it have an API?

Yes! In today’s IT world an API is a must for adding such systems to your automation and workflows. You can integrate and automate with WhatsUp Gold’s Rest API so you not only get notifications of potential issues and problems but you can also take immediate action with your own trusted automation tools!

Some of my Favorite Features

Here are some of my personal favorite features I came across while exploring WhatsUp Gold with their 14-day free trial in my lab!

HA Monitoring!

There’s an available Failover Manager for WhatsUp Gold, so you can monitor your infrastructure with a Primary Instance and then in the event of a failure or maintenance, you can monitor from a Secondary Instance! So, you’re always monitoring, tracking configuration changes, and collecting those logs no matter what! What’s great about the failover is that YOU determine the failover criteria – not WhatsUp Gold. Did one service go down, or did they all go down? You determine what triggers failover to the secondary instance of WhatsUp Gold.

Configuration Management

From the whatsup gold website

I’m no stranger to compliance! I work with tons of different customers faced with all sorts of compliance and regulation requirements. From PCI DSS, HIPPA, and SOX to name a few. With the Configuration Management module, you can manage configuration changes and be alerted when someone else makes a change. You can back up your configuration and automate the rollout of planned changes. You can also stay compliant with policies and perform regular audits of all your networking devices.

Actual photo of compliance regulations. (just kidding)

Distributed Edition

Have a large network you need to keep track of? Not a problem with WhatsUp Gold Distributed Edition! You can put instances in different geos just for tracking and monitoring infrastructure within that geo and report back to a centralized instance of WhatsUp Gold! Or maybe you just have a lot of remote sites! I used to work for a global manufacturing company with the infrastructure in the US, UK, India, and China! This kind of distributed monitoring would have been perfect!

System Requirements that Won’t Break the Bank

These system requirements won’t break the budget and should make it easy to spin up a virtual machine to deploy a trial of WhatsUp Gold. As of this writing, the system requirements are Windows Server 2012, 2016, or 2019, 100 Mbps NIC, Quad-core 2.6 GHz processor, 8 GB of memory, and 25 GB of storage for installation. Check this link for the most up-to-date system requirements.

Go, get started today!

There are so many ways you can get started and learn more about WhatsUp Gold and what it can do for you and your infrastructure! The most immersive and complete option is the 14-day, fully featured, no-obligation FREE trial.

Want to check out WhatsUp Gold but don’t want to use your precious compute and storage – well there’s an entire interactive demo available to you right here.

Next, is an on-demand webinar you can watch ANYTIME, so there’s no need to block time in your calendar or try to reschedule a meeting. Just watch it when you’re available. You can sign-up for that here.

And, if you just want to read more about WhatsUp Gold first you can do so with their library of datasheets, found here.

Final Thoughts

Infrastructure monitoring is an important and essential piece for any Systems Administrator or Engineer. Let’s face it, it’s impossible to watch everything we’re responsible for all – the – time! WhatsUp Gold is one monitoring platform I had always heard about throughout my entire career but for one reason or another I had never taken the time to get to know their solution. I’m extremely glad I finally took the time to do so, and I would encourage you to do the same!
