Man suffers serious stab wound during robbery in Midvale

MIDVALE, Utah — One person is in serious condition and two people have lesser injuries after a stabbing and robbery in Midvale early Wednesday morning.

Lt. Barker of the Unified Police Department said the robbery occurred near 174 La Salle Drive in Midvale around 1:30 a.m.

Barker said two men and a woman were walking in the area when five or six men attacked them. One of the men suffered a stab wound to his back and was taken to a hospital in serious condition.

The other two had minor injuries.

Barker said the attackers took the victims’ phones during the attack.

Police: man critically injured in crash fled from traffic stop, ran red lights and crashed on Bangerter

RIVERTON, Utah — A 29-year-old man is in critical condition after crashing his pickup truck into an SUV after fleeing from police Sunday night.

The crash occurred near 13400 South on Bangerter Highway around 8:30 p.m. Sunday.

According to Unified Police, things began around 7 p.m. with several reports the driver of a pickup truck was harassing several people on ATVs in the area of 6800 South and U-111.

When police pulled the man over, they located an open container of alcohol inside the Ford pickup truck. The man fled from that stop.

Police then responded to a crash near 13400 South and Bangerter, where they found the man had ultimately crashed into an SUV turning left onto the highway.

“Witnesses are telling us is that the pickup truck had been driving down Bangerter, basically slowing down for lights but blowing through red lights,” said Sgt. Melody Gray of the Unified Police Department.

The driver of the pickup was taken to the hospital by ambulance and is in “extremely critical” condition, police said, but the occupants in the other vehicle were properly restrained and suffered minor injuries.

Police said the man will face multiple charges for the pursuit and ensuing crash.

Southbound lanes of Bangerter Highway were closed south of 13400 for more than two hours as a result of the crash but have since reopened.

KEARNS, Utah — Unified Police are asking for help identifying three persons of interest in a homicide that occurred in Kearns Wednesday.

One person was killed and one person was seriously wounded in the shooting, which occurred inside a home near 4800 South and 4700 West.

UPD released several photos that show three people and two separate vehicles. Anyone who recognizes the individuals or vehicles is asked to contact Unified Police at 801-743-7000.

Police said the man wearing a white head covering in one photo and the man pictured running down the street in another are the same individual.

Police identified the deceased Thursday as 34-year-old John Herman Tonga.

Police identify man shot, killed inside home in Kearns

KEARNS, Utah — One person is dead and another person is in serious condition after a shooting inside a home in Kearns Wednesday morning.

Police identified the deceased Thursday as 34-year-old John Herman Tonga of Midvale.

Sgt. Melody Gray of the Unified Police Department said there were several people inside the home when the shooting occurred around 7:30 a.m.

Officers arrived on scene near 4800 South and 4700 West, and they found one man dead on the ground outside the home.

A short time later another male arrived at a nearby hospital in serious condition with gunshot wounds. Police determined that person was inside the home where the shooting occurred.

Gray said there were an additional six people inside the home beyond the two who were hit. At this time there are no details about a possible suspect or suspects, and Gray said they are processing evidence and interviewing witnesses to determine what happened.

While police released the deceased’s identity Thursday, they did not release any additional details about the shooting or investigation.

No further details about the incident or a possible suspect are available.

Unified Police seek man who evaded officers after chase, say he’s armed and dangerous

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah — Unified Police are looking for a man they said should be considered armed and dangerous after a chase that went from Taylorsville to West Valley City early Thursday.

Police are looking for James Carter, who they described as a white supremacist gang member.

A sergeant in an unmarked vehicle spotted Carter in the passenger seat of a stolen vehicle in Taylorsville around 1 a.m. When he attempted a traffic stop, the woman driving the car fled.

The chase continued into West Valley City, where police spiked the tires to disable the vehicle. Both occupants fled on foot from there, and police apprehended the woman.

Carter evaded officers and is still on the run.

“We did several tracks to no avail tonight, so we don’t know if he got into a house, if he has a friend in the area…. possibly a car scooped him up,” said Lt. Bill Robertson with Unified Police.

Police have not yet released the identity of the woman who was driving the vehicle, but they said she has an extensive criminal history and existing warrants.

Carter is described as a male in his mid 40s, but no further description was immediately available.

Man reported missing, endangered in Midvale found safe

Woman in critical condition after being hit by garbage truck; NB Redwood Road closed at 4700 South

TAYLORSVILLE, Utah — A woman is in critical condition after being hit by a garbage truck in Taylorsville Wednesday morning.

Dispatchers said the crash occurred at 4610 South Redwood Road, and Fox 13 News first heard report of the crash around 7:22 a.m.

Unified Police state northbound lanes of Redwood Road are closed at 4700 South as crews respond.

Unified Police said a woman was hit by a garbage truck and is in critical condition.
