INDIANAPOLIS – An investigation is underway after two people were killed and five others were injured in a shooting in downtown Indianapolis Saturday morning.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, the shooting happened just before 1:30 a.m. near the intersection of South Illinois Street and West Washington Street.

Investigators say officers were already responding to another disturbance near West Washington Street and North Meridian Street when they learned of a second disturbance. As officers responded, they heard gunfire in the area.

When officers arrived on scene, they located multiple people hit by gunfire. Officers and medics rendered aid to the individuals who were injured. Five people were transported to area hospitals for treatment. A sixth person walked into an area hospital and is in stable condition, according to police.

One person was pronounced deceased at the scene. Investigators did not provide the age or the identity of the individual.

Of the individuals shot, three are juveniles and three are adults. One of the juveniles died from their injuries at an area hospital, according to police.

Officers recovered numerous firearms at the scene and detained multiple for questioning. Investigators are still looking to see if the firearms collected and the people detained were involved.

IMPD Chief Chris Bailey called on parents and guardians to “step up” after officers made at least 20 arrests before the downtown shooting took place. Of the arrests made, officers found guns on two kids, one of those being an assault rifle. according to police.

“Hundreds of unsupervised kids down here,” Bailey said. “I don’t know how many times I have to say it. We are not your children’s keepers. You are! Parents and guardians have got to step up. A kid is dead tonight and we just don’t know the age of the young man down the street still here, dead. He looks young.”

Bailey said he will work with the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office to see if there is a way to hold parents accountable for their children’s actions.

“If I can convince the prosecutor to hold the parents accountable, I’m going to do that too” Bailey said. “There has to be more than what just are the police doing.”

This is a developing story. It will be updated when new information has been made available.
