SLC Police gathering evidence at crime scene connected to search for MacKenzie Lueck

SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake City Police said they served a search warrant at a home in the Fairpark area that is related to the MacKenzie Lueck case.

Neighbors tell Fox 13 police arrived at the home near 500 North and 1000 West around noon Wednesday. The home is near the park where Lueck was last seen.

A gray Kia sedan was towed away from the home just after 7:00 p.m. Wednesday and neighbors said police have spoken with the home owner, but it’s not clear what came of that conversation.

Officers have been on scene with K-9 units and forensic personnel.

Police secured DNA of some kind in the home but said it is still being tested, and vans have taken evidence of some kind from the home.

The case remains an open investigation and is still a missing persons case, police said. An update is expected later Thursday morning.

SLCPD Assistant Chief Tim Doubt said, “Obviously we are treating this with a high degree of care and caution as it is an open case and given the nature of this case, we just don’t want to make any mistakes. We will continue to follow leads until this is resolved.”

SLC PD has set up a dedicated tip line for this case at 801-799-4420.

This is a developing story. It will be updated as new information becomes available.

Police have ‘person of interest’ in MacKenzie Lueck case; ask for help locating mattress, box spring

SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake City Police have a person of interest in the case of missing University of Utah student MacKenzie Lueck.

Salt Lake City Police spoke in a press conference Thursday morning after serving a warrant and removing evidence from a home in Salt Lake City near where the woman was last seen.

Chief Mike Brown said the owner of that residence is considered a person of interest in the case. No arrests have been made at this time.

He also said they are trying to locate a mattress and box spring that were given away at a residence at 547 North 1000 West in the Fair Park area of Salt Lake City.

Brown said they want the person who took those items to contact their department.

Other evidence taken from the home is being “processed and analyzed and this will take some time,” Brown said.

The search for Lueck remains an open investigation.

Fox 13 News will update this story as more details emerge.

Utah Domestic Violence Coalition calls out ‘blatant’ victim blaming amid search for MacKenzie Lueck

SALT LAKE CITY — the Utah Domestic Violence Coalition is calling out victim blaming amid the speculation surrounding the disappearance of MacKenzie Lueck.

Officers are gathering evidence Thursday at a home they said is connected to the search for Lueck, which remains an open case.

Thursday morning the UDVC released a statement, saying that much of the speculation about the missing woman has been “a blatant form of victim blaming.”

The statement said in part:

“While we do not know the details of Mackenzie’s disappearance, we do know that victim blaming and shaming is inappropriate and unacceptable. In addition to perpetuating myths about abuse, assault, and violence, victim blaming wrongly excuses the perpetrator’s behaviors.

Our focus should solely be on the safety and wellbeing of Mackenzie Lueck.”

Support is available 24/7 in Utah for those dealing with domestic or intimate partner violence. Visit the Utah Domestic Violence Coalition online or call 1-800-897-5465 for resources and assistance. In an emergency, dial 911.

Police obtain warrant for Mackenzie Lueck’s cellphone; other warrants expected soon

SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake City Police have obtained a warrant for Mackenzie Lueck’s cellphone records, and are expected to gain warrants for her bank and social media accounts in the ongoing effort to locate her.

Lueck, a senior at the University of Utah, disappeared in the early morning hours of Monday, June 17 after taking a Lyft from the Salt Lake City International Airport and meeting with an unknown person at Hatch Park in North Salt Lake.

On Monday, police confirmed Lueck’s Lyft driver went on to pick up other passengers and was not involved with her disappearance. They also said there is no evidence of foul play, but there are a number of unanswered questions, namely:

  • Does Mackenzie have an alternate phone that she has used or is using?
  • Who did Mackenzie meet in North Salt Lake City?
  • Does Mackenzie have any social media accounts we don’t know about?
  • Does Mackenzie want to be found?

Police are expected to give their next update on the investigation into Luecks’ disappearance on Tuesday at 2 p.m. Watch fox13now.com and the Fox 13 News Facebook page for live coverage.
