RCMP presentation and intermunicipal agreements the focus of Brazeau County Council

At their February 18 meeting, Brazeau County Council received a presentation from RCMP Staff Sergeant Malcolm Calihoo and Sergeant Erin Matthews on results from the Drayton Valley RCMP’s public survey on police priorities. The detachment also listed their own priorities for 2020.

The top three priorities identified in the survey are major property crime, minor property crime, and increased focus on prolific offenders.

The RCMP consults municipal councils when it sets yearly priorities. The operating year for the RCMP begins April 1.

Brazeau County Council also discussed the Intermunicipal Development Plans (IDP) and Intermunicipal Collaboration Frameworks (ICF) with the Village of Breton and the Town of Drayton Valley.

Concerns were raised from the public regarding plan areas and how this could restrict development.

Council noted that they are provincially mandated and the deadline for submission is April 1, 2020. Council tabled the Breton documents in order to get more clarity from Breton Council, but gave first reading to both Drayton Valley documents and set a public open house to take place on February 27 at the Mackenzie Centre from 5 to 8 pm.

The Leduc County and Brazeau County ICF was also presented for information.

Council directed staff to work with Rally Canada to finalize a draft resolution to be presented to the Rural Municipalities of Alberta (RMA) for endorsement. The resolution will urge governments to prioritize job creation in Alberta to support business and industry.

Council also received a petition of 1,210 signatures from Brazeau County and Drayton Valley residents in support of a new aquatic facility.

A final budget meeting date was set for Council to adopt the 2020 budget. The meeting will take place on April 22 at 1 pm, and the public is welcome to attend.
