PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — The Calvert County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) appointed Bradley J. Neitzel as the county’s next attorney Tuesday, concluding a search that began in January.

Neitzel is scheduled to begin Oct. 19. He currently serves as chief of litigation for the Baltimore County Office of Law in Towson.

The county attorney acts as Calvert County government’s chief legal adviser and leads the Office of the County Attorney. The office provides legal services to the commissioners, county administrator, county departments and advisory boards and commissions.

According to information presented during the BOCC’s Sept. 29 meeting, commissioners and senior county officials interviewed Neitzel on July 28. The board reached a consensus during a Sept. 22 closed session to move forward with his appointment before considering his employment agreement publicly Tuesday.

Commissioners approved the appointment without opposition. The agreement was initially made contingent on the outcome of a separate discussion over severance provisions for senior county employees.

Later in the meeting, commissioners voted to increase the potential severance period in certain department head contracts from three months to six months and include the provision in Neitzel’s agreement. Commissioner Mike Hart opposed that motion, while Commissioner Catherine Grasso abstained.

Neitzel has worked as an assistant Baltimore County attorney since 2021. He previously served as a senior assistant county attorney in Harford County from 2016 to 2021 and worked for the Maryland Office of the Attorney General as an assistant attorney general and senior litigation counsel.

He also served as an assistant state’s attorney in St. Mary’s County from 2007 to 2008, according to the county’s announcement of his appointment.

Commissioner President Todd Ireland described Neitzel as an experienced attorney with decades of service to Maryland residents.

Neitzel’s salary and benefits are included in Calvert County’s adopted fiscal 2027 budget. County staff said the appointment does not require additional funding.
