LiveU & AP Expand Global Newsgathering Workflows

The Associated Press is expanding its global newsgathering operation with LiveU technology, including the industry’s largest deployment of LU900Q production units, as the news organization looks to speed the path from field reporting to customer delivery.

The rollout will connect tools AP journalists use in the field worldwide and push AP’s global LiveU hardware fleet to more than 100 encoders, LiveU said.

AP will deploy LiveU Ingest, LiveU Transceivers and LiveU IQ connectivity across its operations. The LU900Q units are designed for difficult environments, including conflict zones, major political events and places where connectivity can be limited or unreliable.

The units use AI-driven connection management and eSIM technology to draw on mobile networks around the world, LiveU said.

AP also has integrated LiveU Ingest with its cloud-based media asset management system, a move the company said supports up to 10 simultaneous live channels and helps move content more quickly from the field into AP workflows.

Matthew Durbin, AP’s director of video technology and operations, said the expansion will give journalists more flexibility in transmitting live from the scene. “We’re excited about expanding our work with LiveU to equip our journalists with the technology to transmit live wherever the story takes them,” he said.

“Additionally, using LiveU Ingest with our MAM system gives us greater flexibility and speed, allowing us to move even faster and more efficiently from capturing content to distributing it to our customers around the world,” Durbin added.

AP is also moving its infrastructure toward a SMPTE ST 2110 IP environment and will deploy five LiveU servers plus a dedicated SDI server.

LiveU Transceivers will let AP send and receive feeds with content providers as needed, while LiveU IQ is designed to switch among available mobile operators in real time to maintain transmission quality as conditions change.

Zion Eilam, LiveU senior vice president of international sales, said the technology is built for AP’s demanding working conditions. “AP operates in some of the most demanding newsgathering environments in the world, so reliability, quality and flexibility are critical. It was important for us to bring advances that give their teams an edge.”

LiveU said AP has been a longtime customer and uses its technology to support services for clients and content partners. The company said the feeds can support both traditional broadcast and digital platforms as demand grows for live coverage across multiple channels.
