Cool, quirky, rare, and more displayed among hundreds at inaugural Ashland car show

ASHLAND – Chances are, you’ve probably never seen an Isuzu VehiCROSS before.

It’s no Lamborghini Murcielago but the unassuming, quirky two-door Japanese SUV is almost as rare as the Italian hypercar, using production numbers alone.

About 4,000 VehiCROSS examples came stateside of 6,000 built versus 4,000 Murcielagos ever made.

One graced the cover of the Playstation 2 hit Need For Speed Hot Pursuit 2 while the other was a bit of an easter egg in another PS2 game, Tokyo Xtreme Racer 3.

But, one was at Ashland’s first ever Coal Region Car Show at Memorial Field uptown.

The bright yellow SUV and its two mini models were among 238 vehicles that packed the football field on Saturday.

The VehiCROSS may not be everyone’s cup of tea, so-to-speak, but the field offered something for everyone, whether you’re a fan of classic or modern muscle, trucks, sports cars, you name it.

There was a dune buggy, an ex-police cruiser, Willys Jeep, and even a 1950’s Ford flatbed with a bit of a menacing look towering over the rest.

Awards were handed out, including the Distinguished Stewardship Award which went to John “Jack” Jones.
