BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — September 6, 2026
Bloomington police are investigating after a 19-year-old man was shot early Sunday morning during an apparent disturbance on Kirkwood Avenue.
The Monroe County Central Emergency Dispatch Center received multiple 911 calls reporting a shooting in the 300 block of East Kirkwood Avenue at 1:07 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 6, 2026, according to the Bloomington Police Department.
Officers responding to the area found blood and personal belongings on the sidewalk near the southwest corner of the Monroe County Public Library but did not initially locate the person who had been shot.
A short time later, police learned that a 19-year-old man had arrived at IU Health Bloomington Hospital with a gunshot wound to his neck and shoulder. The man was believed to be in stable condition Sunday, police said.
Investigators attempted to interview the injured man at the hospital, but police said he declined to cooperate or provide information about the shooting.
Witnesses told officers that two men appeared to be involved in a disturbance near Kirkwood Avenue and Lincoln Street before one of them pulled out a handgun and pointed it at the other man. Witnesses then heard a single gunshot, and people began running from the area, according to police.
Officers found apparent bullet damage to the brick exterior of Old National Bank, across the street from where the shooting occurred. Witnesses said the suspected shooter entered a nearby vehicle and fled before officers arrived.
The Bloomingtonian went to the scene shortly after the shooting and found police had cordoned off a block of Kirkwood Avenue with yellow crime-scene tape. Blood spots remained visible near a parking meter on the sidewalk along the Kirkwood side of the library.
No suspect had been identified as of Sunday morning, and the investigation remained active.
The shooting marks at least the third person shot on Kirkwood Avenue since April, when two people were wounded during a street takeover amid Little 500 weekend.
Anyone with video or information about Sunday’s shooting is asked to contact Bloomington Police Department Detective Chris Scott at 812-339-4477 or scottc@bloomington.in.gov.
