Baxter County delinquent tax auction brings in more than $223,000

A regional tax-delinquent property auction in late August generated more than $261,000 in sales, with the bulk of the proceeds coming from properties in Baxter County.

The Commissioner of State Lands Office says 148 Baxter County parcels were offered during the auction, with 62 selling for a combined $223,783. The sales resulted in $24,049 in delinquent taxes collected.

In Stone County, all four parcels offered were sold, bringing in $37,791 and collecting $1,958 in delinquent taxes.

Overall, 73 bidders registered for the regional auction and purchased 66 of the 152 parcels offered for a total of $261,574. The properties had taxes delinquent since 2021.

Commissioner of State Lands Tommy Land said most property owners redeem their property by paying the delinquent taxes before it reaches auction.

“Most owners redeem their property by paying the delinquent taxes; we only auction a fraction of the parcels certified for delinquent taxes,” Land said. “Of course, we hope property is redeemed if the owners want to keep it, but it is vital that the parcels return to the county’s active tax rolls.”

The Commissioner of State Lands Office distributes collected taxes and interest back to counties. Baxter County received $228,196 in turnback funds last year, while Stone County received $52,203.

Properties that did not sell may still be redeemed by their owners through the Commissioner of State Lands Office. Owners can visit www.cosl.org <http://www.cosl.org> or call 501-324-9422 to request a Petition to Redeem.

Unsold parcels will become available for purchase through an online post auction sale after 30 days.
