Search warrant: Driver admitted to using cocaine days before Brooklyn Center crash that killed girl, injured another

New court documents show the driver involved in a Brooklyn Center crash that left a 6-year-old girl dead and another in critical condition said she used cocaine days before.

As previously reported, the two girls were riding eastbound on 63rd Avenue North, approaching Brooklyn Drive, when a car heading south on Brooklyn Drive hit them, according to Brooklyn Center officials.

Authorities said the two girls were brought to North Memorial, where one was declared dead. Her name is Dreme Williams, her family confirmed to 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS.

The other girl is recovering in the hospital, according to family.

A search warrant filed in Hennepin County states that the scene examination and a witness interview showed the driver, a 51-year-old woman, was speeding, but not excessively.

There are no stop signs or other traffic control at that intersection, court records note.

The woman remained on scene and was “emotional and admitted to striking the children,” according to the search warrant. The woman said she didn’t know why she didn’t see the children.

Court documents state that a search of the car found a substance that “could have been cocaine” on the driver’s seat.

The driver took a preliminary breath test, which showed a BAC of .000%, court records show. Due to the possibility of cocaine, a search warrant was applied for her blood, and she was brought to the Brooklyn Center police station.

While at the station, the woman admitted to using cocaine two days ago and showed additional evidence of impairment, which included “nodding off,” according to the search warrant.

A judge also signed a search warrant for an extraction of the woman’s phone to rule that out as a cause since she had no recollection of the crash or how it happened.

5 EYEWITNESS NEWS has reached out to Brooklyn Center police to see if they have referred the case to the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office for charging.
