Microsoft to Stop Security Updates for Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro Editions

Microsoft has issued a 60-day reminder that Windows 11 version 24H2 Home and Pro editions will reach the end of servicing on October 13, 2026.

The same deadline also applies to Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB 2016, requiring organizations and individual users to plan upgrades before their devices lose access to regular security fixes.

After October 13, systems running Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro will continue to operate, but they will no longer receive monthly security updates, non-security preview releases, or quality improvements.

Microsoft to Stop Security Updates for Windows 11 24H2

This creates a growing window of exposure for newly disclosed vulnerabilities, exploitation techniques, malware operations, and ransomware campaigns.

Microsoft recommends that affected users move to Windows 11 version 25H2, also known as the Windows 11 2025 Update. Updating to a supported release ensures devices remain eligible for monthly security patches and reliability fixes distributed through Windows Update.

The deadline is particularly important for unmanaged Windows endpoints. Personal computers, small-business systems, remote devices, and rarely connected laptops can remain on outdated builds long after an upgrade campaign begins.

These systems may not be covered by centralized endpoint-management platforms, leaving them vulnerable if users ignore update prompts or lack sufficient local storage for feature upgrades.

Organizations should begin with asset discovery to identify every system running Windows 11 version 24H2.

Security and IT teams should verify the installed edition, servicing status, hardware compatibility, storage capacity, and update policies before scheduling migration activities.

A phased deployment strategy can reduce operational risk. Enterprises should first validate Windows 11 25H2 with critical applications, security agents, VPN clients, identity tools, and business-specific software. Pilot deployments should include representative devices from different departments before broader rollout rings are activated.

Windows 11 24H2 Enterprise and Education editions follow a different lifecycle. Those commercial editions remain supported until October 12, 2027, providing managed environments with an additional year for testing and migration.

However, this longer window should not delay planning, particularly for organizations that maintain mixed fleets of Home, Pro, Enterprise, and Education devices.

Microsoft’s October 13, 2026 deadline also affects Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB 2016, a release frequently deployed in fixed-purpose and operationally sensitive environments.

These include industrial control workstations, medical devices, point-of-sale terminals, kiosks, and other systems where feature stability is prioritized over frequent operating-system changes.

Once support ends, Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB 2016 devices will stop receiving monthly security updates and non-security preview releases. Microsoft recommends migrating these systems to Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC 2024, its current Long-Term Servicing Channel offering.

For organizations that cannot complete migration before the deadline, Extended Security Updates can provide temporary protection. ESU should be treated as a time-limited risk-reduction measure rather than a permanent replacement for an operating-system upgrade.

Unsupported Windows installations are attractive targets for threat actors because security vulnerabilities may remain unpatched indefinitely.

Security teams should inventory affected assets, test upgrade paths, document exceptions, and prioritize Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro upgrades to version 25H2 before October 13, 2026.
