Appear Demonstrates Broadcast-Grade REMI Over Bonded 5G & LEO Satellite With Racing Victoria

Appear ASA said Tuesday it completed a proof of concept with Thoroughbred Racing Productions that showed full multi-camera remote-integration, or REMI, live production can run over bonded 5G cellular and low Earth orbit satellite links without fixed fiber.

The trials transported four live high-definition camera feeds from remote racecourses to TRP’s production center while returning two HD program feeds to the venues on the same bonded network, the company said. Appear used its compact X5 platform at the racecourses and an X20 at the production facility, encoding video in HEVC and moving it with the company’s hardware-accelerated secure reliable transport (SRT) over bonded 5G and LEO links.

TRP is the production arm of Australia’s Racing Victoria and produces live coverage from 51 regional racecourses across the state. Twenty venues and metropolitan sites already have wired connectivity; 31 regional courses lack that access, prompting TRP to test whether REMI could be extended to those locations without dedicated infrastructure.

The POC ran at two racecourses, including one remote venue that faced heavy rain and difficult weather. Across both sessions, Appear said all four camera feeds and the two return feeds arrived without video-quality problems or operator intervention, demonstrating the platform’s resilience and low-latency performance under variable network conditions.

“Remote production continues to transform the economics of live broadcasting, but until now its benefits have often depended on access to dedicated network infrastructure,” Appear CEO Thomas Bostrøm Jørgensen said. “This proof of concept demonstrates that broadcasters can reliably extend those same production models to remote venues using bonded 5G cellular and LEO satellite connectivity.”

Appear said the X5 platform simultaneously transported the four camera feeds and two return feeds in a single compact unit. The platform also can be reconfigured by software to support JPEG XS workflows over high-bandwidth IP networks, letting broadcasters use the same hardware for remote and metropolitan productions.

“For us, this wasn’t simply about proving that the technology works; it was about validating a new way of producing live racing from some of our most remote venues,” Charles Cole, engineering and technical operations manager at Thoroughbred Racing Productions, said. He said the trials gave TRP confidence that multi-camera REMI over bonded cellular and satellite links is a practical option for regional racecourses and supports plans to centralize production resources.

Appear said the result offers a pathway for broadcasters to extend premium live coverage to locations lacking fixed connectivity while reducing operational complexity. The company positioned the work as further evidence of its role as a technology partner for broadcasters seeking scalable remote production over public connectivity.
