Familiar face sworn in as West Mahanoy’s new police chief

SHENANDOAH HEIGHTS – The new police chief is a familiar face in West Mahanoy Township.

Anthony Kankowski was sworn in as the township’s new police chief at Tuesday night’s township supervisors meeting.

“It took us some time to find somebody because we wanted to find the right person to change it around,” Supervisors Chairman Paul “Pepper” Martin said after swearing him in. “We’re going to have more protection and we’re going to have someone on every weekday.”

Kankowski was a part-time patrolman with the township while working full-time in Locust Township. He was previously a full-time Frackville patrolman and Gordon police chief.

Former Chief Matt Williams resigned from the post last month, staying on as a part-time patrolman.

In other business, Martin said six digital speed limit signs are in and will be placed throughout the township.
