Officer and domestic assault suspect identified in shooting incident outside Regions

The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) has released the identity of the officer and suspect involved in a use-of-force incident outside Regions Hospital on Monday.

According to the BCA, the officer is Jacob Pederson, a St. Paul police officer with 12 years of law enforcement experience. He is on critical incident leave as the investigation continues.

The suspect has been identified as 21-year-old Tayshawn Brown-Roberts of St, Paul.

According to the BCA, the incident began around 9 a.m. when St. Paul Police were called to a domestic assault call on the 400 block of Temperance Street. Police were told by the victim that the suspect had left the area and was armed with a firearm.

Brown-Roberts was then found on 12th Street near Regions Hospital, where officers attempted to detain him. However, the BCA said Brown-Roberts ran from those officers and was then confronted by more police.

According to the BCA, during the interaction, Brown-Roberts “removed an object that appeared to be a handgun” from a handbag. Officer Pederson discharged his firearm, striking and injuring Brown-Roberts.

Brown-Roberts was taken to Regions Hospital to treat his injuries. BCA said it had recovered a Glock replica BB gun from the scene, as well as videos from police cars and body cameras.

The BCA is still investigating this incident and will forward its findings to the Ramsey County Attorney’s Office for review once completed.
