“Concerning phone call” prompted lockdown, large police response at IU Health Bloomington

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — August 7, 2026

A “concerning phone call” prompted IU Health Bloomington Hospital to briefly close Thursday evening as officers from several police agencies surrounded the hospital, IU Health confirmed Friday.

The Bloomingtonian photographed a substantial police presence around the hospital Aug. 6, with vehicles and officers from IU Health Public Safety, Indiana University Police and Indiana State Police positioned at multiple locations around the hospital complex.

Indiana University Police vehicles were stationed near entrances and along access roads, including at the hospital’s North Entrance. An Indiana State Police vehicle and officers were also present, while IU Health Public Safety officers and vehicles were positioned elsewhere around the building.

At the time, scanner dispatches provided incomplete information about what had prompted the response, and unconfirmed explanations began circulating online. The Bloomingtonian reported Thursday evening that the reason for the lockdown was unclear and contacted IU Health for official information.

IU Health responded Friday afternoon.

“The hospital was closed briefly after receiving a concerning phone call,” an IU Health spokesperson said. “It was opened shortly after with no incidents. IU Health is working with Indiana State Police on an investigation.”

IU Health did not disclose the nature of the phone call or provide further information about what led authorities to close the hospital.

The hospital reopened shortly after the closure, and IU Health said there were no incidents.

Indiana State Police is investigating.
