Shenandoah National Night Out expands, adds new groups, activities

SHENANDOAH – Shenandoah Fire Chief Rick Examitas remarked that National Night Out seems to be growing each year.

This year’s edition included a variety of new and returning community groups. They all gathered along East Washington Street at the Shenandoah Ambulance garage Tuesday evening.

One newcomer was the Schuylkill Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) group, affiliated with the Schuylkill Amateur Repeater Association. It’s a volunteer group of licensed amateur radio operators who assist communities and emergency responder agencies in instances when normal communication methods are not available.

Shenandoah’s National Night Out isn’t limited to the borough. First responders from surrounding West Mahanoy Township as well as the Ringtown Valley also took part, including West Mahanoy Township and Union Township police officers.

Volunteers offered hot dogs and pierogies, all donated, as well.

The Shenandoah Police Department offered car seat checks, too.

Lehigh Valley MedEvac was set to return and display their helicopter but an emergency call precluded their participation.
