Marshall High School shuts down parking lot for student use after hours following reports of drinking

Marshall High School has had to stop a years-long tradition of allowing students to use the parking lot as a place to congregate after hours following a report of underage drinking and finding a large number of prohibited items. The school made the announcement July 17 saying school officials had found beer cans, empty vape cartridges and nicotine pouches after inspecting the premises.

Before the recent findings, Searcy County School District Superintendent Valorie McCleary says they have had very few problems. The school provided a trash can and for the most part, the students would use it.

McCleary says law enforcement will be helping the school enforce the change.

She says the school also has video surveillance cameras that cover the parking lot and they will utilize them to identify anyone who violates the new policy.

McCleary says “We offer many school-sponsored activities and sports throughout the summer, and we encourage students to take advantage of these opportunities.”
