Local students’ artwork featured at U.S. Capitol

Artwork created by two area students will be displayed at the U.S. Capitol for the next year after winning their respective Congressional High School Art Competitions. This year’s competition received over 200 submissions from 20 schools.

From Norfork High School, Sophie VanLandingham and Cherokee Village native Coley Rogers are among four Arkansas students selected to represent the state in the annual Congressional High School Art Competition. The winners each received two plane tickets to Washington, D.C., where they attended a ceremony recognizing their artwork now on display in the Capitol’s Cannon Tunnel for the next year.

VanLandingham won the 1st Congressional District competition with her watercolor painting, “Cowboy Collection,” featuring cowboy boots and belt buckles inspired by her lifelong involvement in rodeo. She says the artwork reflects the value and accomplishments represented by well-worn equipment.

Rogers, a recent graduate of the Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts, won the 4th Congressional District competition with “Chief Wolf’s Robe and the Buffalo.” The colorful piece combines pop art influences with Native American imagery to celebrate American history and culture.

The Congressional High School Art Competition was established in 1982 to recognize and encourage artistic talent among high school students. For more information or to view past winning entries visit the House of Representatives website here.
