Scammers posing as landlords in Eden Prairie took over $4,000, police say

Eden Prairie police are warning residents on Friday after four people lost money in a rental scam tied to two local homes.

The Eden Prairie Police Department said the scam happened this summer and involved two Eden Prairie homes. A real estate company owns the homes and lists them for sale.

Police said scammers copied online listing photos and falsely advertised the properties for rent. They showed the victims the homes, had them sign fraudulent lease documents, and took money for deposits and rental fees, bringing the total to more than $4,000.

Authorities said they are working with the realty company to help prevent future scams. The Federal Trade Commission said renters should research the owner or property manager before sending money, and always be skeptical of unusually low rent.
