Yankees Become First AL Team To Strike Out 17 Times in Consecutive Games

The New York Yankees made history Monday, but not the kind anyone wants. They whiffed 17 times against Tampa Bay. That marked consecutive games with 17 strikeouts — a first for any American League squad during a 10-game losing streak.

Ian Seymour mowed down 12 Yankees across 5 1/3 innings. No pitcher had fanned that many Bronx Bombers in more than half a century.

Paul Goldschmidt went down swinging four times. José Caballero matched him with four whiffs of his own. The Yankees managed 11 hits — their first double-digit showing since June 17 — yet still couldn’t score enough runs.

“The performance tonight especially was terrible,” Goldschmidt said, per Yahoo Sports.com “I’d like to try to be more positive than that, but you strike out four times, and there’s guys on base — it’s really just a bad performance.”

Hunter Feduccia crushed one out in the fourth. Yandy Díaz followed with his own blast on the next pitch. Victor Mesa Jr. launched another homer later, pushing Tampa Bay’s division lead to four games.

Bryan Baker notched his 24th save. The Rays’ bullpen continued what Seymour started, keeping bats silent and swings empty.

Ten losses in 12 tries have sunk the Yankees four games behind in the standings. Their bats have gone cold at the worst possible time.

Gerrit Cole gets the ball next against Shane McClanahan. That matchup could snap this brutal skid and breathe life back into their playoff chase.

Tampa Bay owns the season series between these clubs. The Rays have pounced on every weakness, building a comfortable cushion with weeks still left to play.
