The deal shipped Crow-Armstrong — the No. 19 pick in the 2020 draft — to Chicago. In return, New York got Javier Báez and right-hander Trevor Williams. Then-team president Sandy Alderson told reporters the club needed to “demonstrate to the players that we had their back,” Alderson said, per the New York Post.
Things went south fast. New York stood at 56-49 when August rolled around but limped to a 77-85 finish, falling eight games short of October baseball. Báez put up an .886 OPS across two months before bolting to Detroit in free agency that winter.
Crow-Armstrong has turned into one of baseball’s brightest young stars. The 24-year-old made his first All-Star team last season. He snagged his first Gold Glove too. This year, he’s slashing .293/.383/.525 with 19 homers and 23 steals while pacing Major League Baseball in WAR.
New York has squeezed 3.6 WAR from the swap. Chicago has harvested 13.5 WAR from Crow-Armstrong, who remains under contract through 2032.
Scott got bumped up to acting general manager in January 2021. That came one week after Jared Porter got fired over revelations that he’d sent lewd text messages to a female journalist while working for the Cubs in 2016. Scott had logged 17 seasons in the Boston Red Sox front office before joining the Mets in December 2020 to run analytics and systems departments.
The organization cut ties with him after the 2021 season following a DWI arrest. He was cleared of all criminal charges later.
