Flash flooding hits southern Minnesota, closing roadways

Heavy rainfall in southern Minnesota has shut down some roadways, including Interstate 90 in Austin.

The Austin Police Department is reporting flash flooding in the city, stating that heavy rainfall has submerged multiple roadways.

Police are advising residents inside to stay where they are and not attempt to drive until the water level goes down.

“We know many, basically all streets are flooded,” Austin police said in a statement. “There isn’t anything the city can do with the amount of rain in such a short time. Wait it out, stay home. It will go down.”

In a later update, authorities said that I-90 at 11th Drive is closed in both directions, Main Street by Ninth Place Southwest is blocked and Fourth Street by Sixth Avenue Southwest is blocked.

According to a report on MN 511, the National Weather Service states Mower County has already recieved an estimated 4.5 to 7 inches of rainfall.
