Feeding Our Future defendant sentenced to 14 months in prison, ordered to pay $1.4M

A Rochester man who pleaded guilty to funneling misappropriated Federal Child Nutrition Program funds into a shell company will now serve more than a year in prison.

Mustafa Jama pleaded guilty last year to one count of money laundering and was sentenced on Wednesday to 14 months in prison.

Prosecutors say he and his wife, Ayan Jama, deposited more than $1.4 million in ill-gotten taxpayer dollars into a shell company’s bank accounts on behalf of Brava Restaurant, which falsely claimed to be serving meals to children under the sponsorship of Minneapolis nonprofit Feeding Our Future.

According to the Department of Justice, the Jamas used the money to purchase properties on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey and Columbus, Ohio, and pay $394,000 toward a home in Lakeville.

The court ordered Mustafa Jama to repay the $1.4 million, “due immediately,” as restitution. One count each of money laundering and conspiracy to commit money laundering were dismissed at sentencing.
