Giants Sign John Harbaugh to Five-Year, $100 Million Contract To End Three-Season Skid

The New York Giants inked John Harbaugh to a five-year, $100 million deal. This makes him the highest-paid coach in the NFL alongside Kansas City’s Andy Reid. The contract halted the franchise’s trend of hiring first-time head coaches as training camp nears.

Baltimore let Harbaugh go in January. He’d spent 18 seasons with the Ravens. His tenure produced a 180-113 record and a postseason mark of 13-11. Baltimore reached the postseason in 12 of those 18 years under his watch.

Harbaugh guided Baltimore to a Super Bowl XLVII win. Against NFC East foes, he compiled strong numbers: 4-1 versus Dallas, 3-2 against Philadelphia, and 3-2 against Washington.

The Giants have floundered in recent years. They posted a 13-38 record over the past three seasons. Just two winning seasons have occurred over the past 13 years. Their .350 winning percentage during that span ranks third-worst in the NFL behind the New York Jets at .333 and Cleveland Browns at .345.

Josh Petry of Touchdown Wire listed this hire as the team’s biggest reason for optimism this year. “The New England Patriots did it, so why can’t the Giants do the same and turn things around?” Petry wrote.

“John Harbaugh received a hero’s welcome and a $100 million deal,” Petry wrote. “Harbaugh was drawn to the Giants by the team’s young talent on both sides of the ball.”

Petry pointed out that if the core stays healthy, the franchise is building something that could cause problems over the next three to five years. “If any coach can get them to the postseason, it’s John Harbaugh,” Petry wrote.

Fans appear more optimistic this year than in past seasons because of the leadership change. Training camp begins later this month as the organization tries to reverse its fortunes under new guidance.
